The operators of Chalkpit Quarry, Southern Gravel Limited (SGL), are preparing to submit a new application for housing on the site. They are holding a public consultation about their plans.
The consultation runs for two weeks from 16 November to 30 November with two in person consultations being held at Oxted School on Thursday 18 November (6 - 8pm) and Saturday 20 November (11-3pm).
SGL say they want to build up to 100 homes, of which 34% would be affordable, as well as a Care Home. If they get planning permission, they will close the quarry.
In 2014, SGL made another application for housing, that time for 27 homes, which was refused (planning application 2014/741 on the Tandridge District Council website).
In 2020, Surrey County Council lost a public inquiry and a Planning Inspector approved up to 200 HGV lorry movements per day (100 lorries in and 100 lorries out) and up to 100 HGV movements on Saturdays. SGL has a permission for the extraction of minerals and deposit of inert waste which lasts until 2042.
The site is in the Green Belt, and also within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where no development should take place unless the developer can prove that “very special circumstances” exist to justify it.
